I have been told that the sure way to make someone angry is to call school off due to snow. There will be people upset if you do go to school in inclement weather and people upset that you did not go to school in inclement weather. We all have our opinions on the road conditions. I want to take this opportunity to explain to you how I make my decision on whether school will be in session due to inclement weather. There are several factors that come into consideration:

School buildings:

             Are the heating systems working?

Are there any frozen pipes or water leaks?

Are the cafeteria freezers working and keeping food safe for students to eat?

Is the school building safe for students?

Road Conditions:

Are streets inside of our school district safe for parents to travel? Many of our side streets are often unseen by the general public but I drive these streets before making a decision to call off school.

Are we able to clear our parking lots and sidewalks to get students and employees into the buildings?

Are streets being grated, salted, etc?

Is this Fulton County Transit operating? Many of our students use the Transit Authority for transportation to/from school daily. They are one of our most important educational partners and we appreciate their service greatly!

Temperatures:

Are temperatures and wind chill factors so low that students are at risk of frost bite if they are exposed to the cold weather? This is especially important if the Transit Authority is not in session because we have an increased number of walkers when this occurs.

My first and most important concern is the safety of our students. Please know that the decision to cancel school or to go to school is not taken lightly. I appreciate you trusting us with your students and want you to know that we cherish each one of them. Thank you for your interest and understanding as we continue through the first winter storm of 2018.
