JOINT STATEMENT REGARDING THIS MORNING'S SOFT LOCKDOWN AT FULTON HIGH SCHOOL
This morning, Fulton High School briefly implemented a soft lockdown following a report from a concerned parent who contacted authorities stating that her child had been in possession of a realistic-looking BB gun the previous evening and that she was unable to locate it at her residence. Out of an abundance of caution, she expressed concern that the item may have been brought onto school grounds.
Upon receiving the report, school resource officers and school administrators acted quickly to isolate the student and conduct a thorough search of his belongings and all areas of the school grounds he may have accessed. Simultaneously, Fulton City Police Department officers were dispatched to the student's residence to conduct a secondary search.
Upon officers' arrival at the residence, the student's parents had located the BB gun and voluntarily turned it over to officers, who retained it at the family's request. The item was confirmed to be a BB gun and posed no threat to students or staff.
The soft lockdown was brief, lasting less than half of one class period, and normal school operations resumed promptly. At no point were students in any danger.
In today's environment, we cannot treat reports like this as anything less than a priority. The officers and school staff responded swiftly and professionally, and the outcome reflects exactly what community cooperation looks like. We are grateful for this parent's decision to contact us immediately.
Fulton City Police Department and Fulton Independent School District want to reassure the community that today's response is a reflection of the systems and relationships in place to keep our schools safe. Parents and community members are always encouraged to report concerns, no matter how uncertain they may seem.
